Locally Sourced Hydrogen Station From Toyota And Shell Opens In LA

Electric vehicles like the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf are the gasoline alternatives getting most of the press lately, but for us eco-futurists, hydrogen-powered cars are still considered a viable prospect. The next step to getting there just happened with the grand opening of Toyota's new pipeline-fed hydrogen Shell station, located in Torrance, California.
This station marks the first of its kind to dispense hydrogen off a local pipeline. The gas comes from Air Products' hydrogen plants located in the surrounding Los Angeles area. Because all other stations in LA, and the US, use tankers to transport fuel, the major benefit of this new station is having fewer hydrogen tankers on the road and greater output capacities.

The amount of hydrogen the Shell station can output, per day, is almost 10 times the capacity of other fuel stations in the area.

The station is located right next door to Toyota's HQ and will allow all hydrogen vehicles to fill up -- even competitors like the Honda FCX Clarity. There are enough pumps and pressure to allow four vehicles to refill simultaneously in under five minutes.
